Great American Backyard Campout- Getting Families Camping

The Great American Backyard Campout is this Saturday.  On this night,  there will be families camping in their own backyards, as well as campgrounds and in the back country.

The Campout is the signature event of the National Wildlife’s Federation’s Be Out There Movement.  Their goal is to engage 10 million new kids in outdoor play over the next 3 years.

Why is there such an emphasis on camping out?  Well, as you know, camping is a great way to get kids excited about the outdoors and outdoor play.  Consider the fact that 25% of kids play outside every day, compared to 75% a generation ago.  And according to the National Wildlife Federation’s website,

“Studies show that outdoor time helps children grow lean and strong, enhances creativity and attention spans, decreases aggression and boosts classroom performance.”

We couldn’t agree more.  And camping is fun!

So grab your tent.  Grab some snacks.  Grab a flashlight (or 2).  And spend some quality time with your kids in the great outdoors.  It’s as close as your own backyard.

I’ll see ya around the campfire.

While we may not have kids to share this with, sounds like a great excuse to set up our tent in the backyard! Count us in!

  2. We’ll be camping that weekend with three other families. We all have kids around the same age so we hope it’ll be a lot of fun. We booked a group campground too so we will be all together and the kids can run free.

  3. This is fun! We try to do this every year. Today is also National Get Outdoors Day. We’re trying to find something to do and not burn up.

We did this! I remembered seeing it on your website and we camped out Saturday night and have so much fun. The day was in the mid-90s, but the evening was so nice and cool in the tent.

    • Awesome! Everyone asks us how we tent camp without burning up. I find the nights are usually nice in the tent. When we camp at the campground, we usually bring a fan, but many times we wake up cold in the middle of the night. So glad ya’ll had fun! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
