I recently had the opportunity to review the Big Agnes Picket Mountain 4 tent.  As a tent camper, I was pretty excited about reviewing this tent.  The tent is after all the backbone of our camping experience.

This is the first piece of camping equipment I have owned from Big Agnes.   I have always felt that their camping equipment was a little pricey and I wondered if the quality of their equipment would justify the price.  Let me just say that I was very surprised by the quality of this tent.  The price for this tent is $279.95.  Not a bad price.

Big Agnes 4 Man Tent Review

What We Like

Picket Mountain 4 is a 4 man, 3 season tent.  We love that it is lightweight and very easy to setup.   The tent has plastic clips that attach the tent to the tent poles.  Interesting design.  You don’t need to thread the tent poles through fabric pockets.  Nice.

In addition, the buckles are color coded.  The orange buckles on the rain fly attach to the orange buckles on the tent body.

The guylines are refective for nighttime visibility.  I love this feature!  This has always been a problem with my other tents (it’s hard to see the guylines at night).  I am so glad an outdoors company has addressed this issue.

What We Were Not So Crazy About

The aluminum stakes bent right away even though the ground was still slightly moist from a recent rain.  Granted,  tents usually come with aluminum stakes.  To use this tent, it is imperative that you buy sturdier tent stakes to bring with you.

The Bottom Line

The Big Agnes Picket Mountain 4 tent is an incredibly well-made tent.  I'm very impressed with the attention to details.  Obviously, Big Agnes knows camping and their product development team are very attune to their customers and their camping needs.  Instead of producing the same tents as everyone else, they have sought to perfect the camping tent and improve their customers' overall camping experience.  Car campers will enjoy this tent.

Does their tent quality justify the price?  Well, I can only address the quality of the Picket Mountain 4 tent, but it that instance the answer is a resounding yes.

This Big Agnes tent was provided by the manufacturer for the review.  All opinions are honest and my own.

  1. love the review. I find that 4 person tents are about right for 2 adults and a dog or an adult and a couple of kids. I have a nemo losi 3p and it is a really nice fit, easy to set up and really just about bullet proof.

a good tip is to carry some roll up foil faced insulation. makes a great ground tarp plus adds a ton of warmth and even a little more cushion to bump up the comfort of your sleeping pad

    keep up the awesome work..

  2. WHAT A GREAT review, I love the tips especially about the insulation.
    Thanks!

  3. Thanks for the review. I’m considering buying a new family tent for car camping this summer. This could work nicely. I have to fight the urge to buy a 6 person tent and bring more stuff. :)

  4. Don’t fight it. The great thing about car camping is that you can go big. At least that’s my philosophy. ;)

  5. I’ve always wondered if the Big Agnes tents were worth the money .. thanks Campy Mom for all the details in your review. About the stakes, I learned long ago to just invest in a good set of stakes. I usually try to find another use for stakes that come with the tents I buy. I also wanted to say that I love your blog!

  6. Thank you for your review.
I have been searching for reviews on the Big Agnes Picket Mountain Tent: 4-Person 3-Season. I did purchase this tent on sale for under $200.00 on Amazon. I car camp with a group of people but set up my site alone. I wanted easy to set up. I wanted this tent for the window in the door that zips open & closed for ventilation, also for privacy & the window on the opposite wall that zips open & closed. I have used Eureka tent I had for over 5 years that I loved. But needed a step up to a better tent for fall camping. I always use a footprint and I always buy heavy duty stakes. I’m excited to use my new tent next month for two weeks of camping on the coast of California. Your review really helped me, thanks again.

  7. Some friends of ours have this tent and they absolutely love it. And I agree that the price seems very fair. Disappointing re the bent stakes, but seems kind of standard for the freebies that usually come with purchase. Sturdier stakes are always worth keeping in the arsenal.
