When You Are Camping Book Review

When You Are Camping Children's Book

Enchanting Children’s Book About Camping

When You Are Camping is a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Anne Lee.  This book is recommended for kids 4-8 years old.  It is a hardcover book with 32 beautifully illustrated pages.

This book centers around Tilly and Hazel as they tent camp with their family.  On their camping trip they encounter animals, bugs and even float down a river.

I love the sweet tone set in this book.  You sense that the two little girls are experiencing camping and the outdoors and all its wonder.  Tilly is in awe of nature and loves to observe the animals and bugs found in the outdoors.  Hazel, on the other hand, loves adventure.  The soft, water color illustrations further enhance this dreamy book.

Lee moves beyond the typical camping cliches you expect to find in a children’s camping book. Instead, she delivers a book that leaves the reader longing to splash around in the rain, “take a bath with fish” and spend time with family around a campfire.  The characters and story actually tug at your emotions.  The themes of nature, animals and family flow through this book.  The book ends on a quiet note…perfect for bedtime at home or at your favorite campsite.

As a camping family, we really enjoy this book.  When You Are Camping captures the emotions we feel while camping and leaves us longing to return to our camping tent for more adventures with our own family.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to review this book.  My kids love this book and so do I.  This author has an overabundance of talent.  From the writing to the illustrations, she hits her mark.  I look forward to seeing how far this book and her other books go.

  1. What a wonderful sounding book and so happy that the contest is open to Canadians!

Hmm… it is hard to pick a favourite place to camp! This year our two favourite places were Graves island and Five Islands Provincial Park which are both in Nova Scotia Canada.

  2. Wow, looks like an awesome book! I love camping books to read when we need some quiet time at camp. Our favourite place to camp – the Canadian Rockies. But We loved camping in Mt. Rainier National Park two summers ago in Washington.

  3. Camping books are the best! Our favourite place is Honeymoon Lake in Jasper NP, Alberta, Canada.

We don’t have a favorite camping spot just yet. We just starting getting more into camping this summer and are having fun camping all over the great state of Wisconsin discovering new campgrounds. I am so excited to hear about another camping book. I am trying to find a few camping books to get for my son for Christmas or his birthday.

  5. Cool book! my boys would love it! I love to camp in Teton National Park! :)

  6. There’s this remote lake in Well Grey Park called Steven’s lake. I can’t wait to go there as a family. It’s definitely a bring the fishing rods type of trip!

  7. Lisa Chapman says:

I have really enjoyed going camping with my daughter and granddaughters at Steele Creek Park in Morganton NC. We didn’t get to go as much as had wanted to this season but are hoping for more times next. We have soooo much fun!! I always hate to leave.

  8. Favorite place to camp, Sandflats, Moab, ut!

  9. Those watercolor illustrations are so filled with light and whimsy in When you are Camping that I just had to visit Anne Lee’s website. I was so glad to see that the author also does commissions. I e-mailed her and asked her to do a watercolor of my family and I camping (I sent her a photo) at Clear Creek State Park in Pennsylvania (my favorite). Thank you so much for bring this evocative book to our attention.

  10. Melissa Wenger says:

We usually camp at campgrounds and tried one last weekend that we really liked – Pier-Lon in Medina, OH.

  11. My girls love this book, and equally importantly, so do I (don’t we all have those books which our kids love but which are TORTURE to read aloud?) We always pause on the starry sky page for a long time. If I win this book I will give it to my camping friends who just had a baby.

I’m not sure about favorite, but one that really surprised me recently… DeSoto State Park in Alabama. We were on a long driving trip so we stayed in one of the old CCC cabins… so much fun with our preschoolers!
